Overview

We are situated in the centre of Helston, next to the town Cricket Club and Rugby Club. The school can trace its roots back to 1828, when the Helston National School (now the Andrew Hall) opened next to St Michael's Church in Church Street. The school is set within spacious grounds and has a separate infant and junior building.

The children at St Michael's come from the town of Helston and the surrounding community. Approximately 30% of our children are Service families from nearby RNAS Culdrose.

The school is lucky enough to have its own small area of woodland which all the children use and enjoy. Our Reception children have Welly Wednesday each week where they spend the morning in the woods and our older children have enjoyed learning survival skills in the woods with our WildTribe trained staff.

St Michael's children regularly compete in inter-school cross country, rugby, swimming, netball and hockey competitions. Children in Years 1-6 take turns each term to have weekly swimming lessons at Helston pool. Sailing lessons are offered to groups of children each year with the Helford River Children's Sailing Trust and we also offer yearly Surf Safe Days with Global Boarders. The school has a rich musical tradition and many of our children learn a musical instrument including drums, keyboard, violin, brass and guitar.

Each year group regularly has the opportunity to participate in educational visits. These have included Pendennis Castle, The Maritime Museum, a train journey and beach day at St Ives, Feadon Farm Wildlife Education Centre and our very own Helston Town Museum where the children also get involved in community projects. There are two residential visits run each year for Year 5 & 6 pupils where they can visit London or take part in an outdoor adventure camp at Porthpean or the Isles of Scilly.

Flora Day is a very important event for the local community and St Michael's children proudly participate in the ancient tradition of the Children's Dance each year.

There is a wide range of after-school activities and enrichment clubs all year round including cross country, Military Kids Club, singing club, tag-rugby and football. We have recently had a very exciting Bike Track installed within the school grounds and children can bring in their bicycles for lunchtime bike track sessions or the popular Bike Track Club after school.

We run an early morning drop-off club called Early Birds and an after-school wrap-around care club called Dragon's, all staffed by St Michael's own staff.

We have an active School Council who often assist in decision making, interviewing new staff, preparing questions for the School Governors and they also enthusiastically debate in the local Guildhall each year!

We hope that you enjoy your visit to our website and that you find the information you are looking for. Please feel free to contact the school directly with any additional queries you may have.
